A series of contemporary artwork pieces

celebrating the British Coast and

Countryside in a style reminiscent

of the 1930's Travel Posters.

These eyecatching pictures have been

described as 'calming and very British'.

BIOGRAPHY

Born in the 60's and attended Bradford Art College.

Completed a Degree in Graphic Design at Newcastle.

Spent the 80's working in London as an 'Art Director'.

In the 90's moved back up North and settled in the Yorkshire Wolds.

For the last ten years I have run my own successful Graphic Design Consultancy, and throughout this time have developed a number of artistic styles, using a variety of different mediums. My eye has been trained by more than 20 years of design to present pleasing harmonious images that are unexpected. My interest lies in deciding which elements to focus on, exaggerate, crop or omit.

ABOUT MY WORK

I would describe myself as a contemporary landscape artist, in that the majority of my work are views of the landscape, be it land or coastal.

The finished work is either a Limited Edition print or forms part of a range of greeting card.

HOW I WORK

Visiting and being in the landscape is a very important element of understanding it for me. The pictures I make are from places that I feel a strong affinity with, and that comes about by being there, walking the dog, seeing and feeling the place.

Drawing is an important element, helping me understand the structure of a landscape and working out compositions. Whilst sketching outside I can get a feel for a place, they are very simple and quick reminders, sometimes no more than a few lines.
I also take many reference photographs, particularly for colour reference.

Armed with sketches and photographs, back at the studio I put my design head on and sketch away, refining the (design) I say design because of my background, I craft it, by means of reduction, I throw out all the unnecessary things that serve to clutter a design.
I will often improvise and cheat reality and let my memory lead the way, I like being inventive.
I distill the lines and contours of the landscape down to minimalist forms and shapes, refining it down until I have a design sketch that I'm happy with.
(sometimes it doesn't work out no matter how sure I am it will)

When I'm happy with my sketch design I scan it in to the computer.
Then I draw it up on the computer, again I will often improvise using artistic licence as I go along.

The finished artwork is a digital 'Vector image' and this means it can be scaled to any size without any loss of quality. These are printed out as 'Limited Edition Giclee Prints' in editions of 250

RECENT WORK

A WALK OF ART!

The East Yorkshire group of the Long Distance walkers Association - EYLDWA

Paul Tremere & John Davis approached me about producing an image specially for their forthcoming walk - The Woldsman. A 50 mile walk through the Yorkshire Wolds.

I created a design specially for this event which was then turned into a cloth badge. The badgemakers pulled out all the sops and used a new technique of differing weaves to help capture the colours.

In addition each walker who completed the course received a Signed Limited Edition Print. Further framed prints are available to the walkers, and from each order I will be donating £10 to the Wagonners' Benefice (5 rural churches in the region).
